Established in 2016, Soulawa is an intermediary platform that bridges handicraft artisans, artists, startup handcraft companies, and small handicraft local businesses with customers located worldwide. As an online craft store, our aim is to be able to bridge this relationship by giving a opportunity for artists to voice out their passion through their creations and provide a way for artisans to inspire and connect with customers.
In addition to being a platform for artisans and potential customers to meet, our aim is also to be able to provide artisans a space where one can develop and share their passion for handmade gifts and hand made products to others globally. By making it easier for handcraft artists to sell their works, this will enable handicraft artisans to continue producing creative handmade gifts and products.
The name Soulawa itself is related to an old ancient trading history called Kula Ring, a ceremonial exchange that took place in the Milne Bay Province of Papua New Guinea. Although not valuable, handmade gifts were used to create social connections between two different parties. The two types of hand made Kula gifts used in this exchange were called Soulava, which is a shell-disc necklace, and Mwali, which is a shell-armband.
Similar to the origins of the name, through the giving of handmade gifts and other handicraft products, obtained from our online hand made craft store, to other people, it is our wish that feelings can be shared with others and relationships can be formed. Despite the various choices available in our craft store, each handcraft item made was designed meticulously by each handicraft artisan, making it the right handmade gifts to give for others.
